    Osteria Francescana is a twelve table, 3-star Michelin restaurant in Modena, Italy. The brainchild of world-renowned chef Massimo Bottura, Osteria Francescana is known for its exquisite and innovative Italian dishes. And even though this restaurant has been beloved by those in the know since it opened twenty years ago, it recently took the number one spot on the “World’s 50 Best Restaurants” in 2016. While the food is the star of the show, the restaurant’s welcoming vibe and tasteful décor only adds to the ambiance. Chef Bottura hand-picks each painting on display at his restaurant, including numerous works by Italian artists.

    Osteria Francescana’s menu seamlessly blends traditional dishes with modern culinary techniques, and diners can decide between trying Chef Bottura’s tasting menus or choosing each item from an à-la-carte menu. His Festina Lente menu features nine courses, including tempura of aula with carpione sorbet, eel swimming up the Po River and tortellini with cream of Parmigiano-Reggiano. Even something as simple as cacio e pepe—a pasta dish flavored with Parmigiano-Reggiano and freshly grated pepper—can become something extraordinary. Chef Bottura created his version—which transforms the classic dish into a creamy risotto—after the 2012 earthquakes that afflicted the Emilia-Romagna region damaged almost 1,000 wheels of Parmigiano Reggiano. By organizing a countrywide dinner and inspiring others to make the same meal throughout Italy, he hoped to breathe new life into the Parma region and help its cheese makers recover. And by all accounts, he succeeded—and beyond! Some of Chef Bottura’s other tantalizing dishes include ox rib eye with pickled vegetables and truffle, tagliatelle with meat ragu and suckling pig with balsamic vinegar. Individual plates cost between $23-$90 USD, and the comprehensive tasting menus are approximately $250. Due to demand, be sure to make a reservation well in advance.
