Take a tour and have a drink
You get to the bar, you immediately order: A Tom Collins. When in New York, Hendrick’s or Bombay will do. When in Charleston, it has to be Hat Trick Gin from High Wire Distillery. – Tatiana Ciccarelli
High Wire Distilling is known as one of South Carolina’s top distilleries and it’s located in Charleston’s historic city center. It was the first distillery to open in Charleston after the end of Prohibition, and High Wire is very proud of this distinction. Each batch of their artisanal spirits are handcrafted using only the best ingredients. They only make each spirit in small quantities, so it’s a good idea for visitors to stock up on the ones that catch their fancy. What’s available changes fairly frequently, but they’ve made gin, rum, whiskey and vodka in the past. Not sure about what to buy? Not a problem. Just take the tasting tour, and head to High Wire on Thursday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. to get a firsthand glimpse of the distilling process. Tours start at the beginning of each hour. Visitors can check out the still, fermentation tanks, bottling operations and everything else that goes into making small-batch spirits. While this isn’t required, High Wire advises visitors to call their phone number to ensure a space on the tour. Make a reservation, then visit their Instagram to see what they’ve been distilling recently.
