Foremost Wine Company
Please tell us more about your business: Two years ago I opened a restaurant called Foremost Wine Co. and within six months of being open, Wine Enthusiast Magazine included us in their ‘Top 100 Wine Restaurants in the United States.’ – Johnny Kenny
Bottles of wine on metallic shelves adorn the walls at Foremost Wine Company, a restaurant located on a quiet street in San Luis Obispo, a city smack dab in the center of California’s Central Coast. The rest of the decor is positively plush: black leather chairs, white gloss tables, vintage pendant lights. Named one of the Top 100 wine restaurants by Wine Business Monthly, Foremost’s menu is the brainchild of executive chef Julie Simon and wine director Robin Puricelli, who have selected a cornucopia of Old World and New World reds and whites. Happy hour, which runs from 4 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. every day, offers wine by the glass for just $2.
At Foremost, the wine takes center stage rather than just complementing the food, and the menu is international: Dry Silvaner ($34 for a bottle) comes from Germany’s Franconia region, while Falanghina ($42) originates from France’s Loire Valley. But you won’t just be drinking here: dinner options include braised duck leg with rice, plums, relish and candied peanuts ($29) and coffee-braised short ribs with Parmesan, horseradish and pickled onions ($35).
Foremost attracts an upscale crowd who wants to indulge in a glass—or two—or three—of wine and enjoy locally-sourced cuisine. Visitors can check out photos of the restaurant on Instagram or book a table online.
