Describe the best meal you’ve ever had and with whom: I’ve had a lot of “best meals” so it’s really tough to pick just one! I think sometimes the environment of where you’re eating and who you’re with is as memorable as the food you’re putting in your mouth. My most memorable experience would be at Flora Farms in Los Cabos, Mexico. – Johnny Kenny
Perched at the base of Sierra de la Laguna—rugged terrain that spans the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula—Flora Farms provides an alfresco dining experience in the foothills of the soaring mountains. Surrounded by towering palms, Field Kitchen, Flora’s restaurant, sits at the center of a 10-acre patch of fertile farmland, home to an abundance of vegetable varieties, such as radishes and pickles. All the food on the menu is sourced from the grounds—wheat, fruit, herbs—before being served to hungry diners who come here for natural, organic ingredients from Mother Earth. In the evening, candlelit tables seduce guests who travel from Cabo San Lucas, a resort city with a sandy beach and pulsing nightlife, 24 miles away.
Field Kitchen, which opened in 2010, runs the gamut from soups to meat dishes to handmade pizzas, providing an eclectic blend of farm-to-table cuisine in the middle of Los Cabos. Its evening menu includes wood-oven roasted young chicken with thyme, lemon and butter ($20) and hay-cooked rabbit with lemon cauliflower puree, charred vegetables and mustard ($20). The restaurant has an ever-changing dessert menu, with the day’s specials displayed on a red-framed chalkboard.
Alternatively, visitors can explore the farm—tours run Tuesday through Saturday—which bursts to the brim with flowers, plants and fresh fruit and veg like tomatoes, cucumbers and cabbages.
