    a conversation with Jason Milov

Full Name: Jason Milov Jason Milov

    Age: 28

What is your current neighborhood? West Hollywood/Los Angeles, CA [In town? Stay in a cottage at The Charlie Hotel and eat vegan Mexican at Gracias Madre!]

What city were you born in? Livingston, NJ

What do you do for a living? Producer

    Social Media Handles: @jasonmilov@neighborhoodprints@opentheportal

Please list any business sites or links if applicable:  www.jasonmilov.com, www.opentheportal.com, www.neighborhoodwasteland.com

Please tell us more about your business: I am currently a producer at Open the Portal, LA’s newest stop motion animation studio. We’re located in a built-out airplane hangar rife with puppets, costumes, a collection of clocks and an in-house library of misfit toys, VHS tapes, and books. The studio more closely resembles an adult version of Pee Wee’s Playhouse than a film production facility. We provide stop motion services to a rapidly growing list of clients, including Katy Perry, Disney, Vans, Honda and more! OTP is also currently developing a scifi stop motion TV show, which is what I’m most excited about.

I am also the co-founder and executive producer within a creative partnership called neighborhood wasteland. We started as an Instagram side project, capturing moments with disposable cameras but are now evolving and creating content for a variety of platforms. We also have a pin (coming soon!). There are some really great projects in the works and we’re super stoked to share them with the world!

What is your favorite kind of bagel? Toasted everything bagel with tuna and provolone

What’s your Alma Mater? University of Delaware

What’s your favorite holiday? Is it weird to say Christmas even though I’m Jewish? It’s pretty much a secular holiday at this point, right?

What do you think your best trait is? I’m a big picture thinker with a knack for connecting the dots. I also wear my heart on my sleeve, which I personally think is great! But sometimes gets me in trouble.

You’re treating a special someone to a romantic weekend away. What locale do you go to and what activities are you planning? Pack my car with all the camping essentials and make the drive out to Joshua Tree! We’d spend the day hiking/exploring and the night building a fire and gazing at the stars. Hopefully make contact with some aliens.

You have one night free in any hotel. Which one do you go to? Ace Hotel & Swim Club in Palm Springs. Just good vibes and stylish 70’s decor. [Find out more about all of the amenities at this hip hotel]

Name one tourist spot you break out your selfie stick for: The one place I wouldn’t feel ashamed with a selfie stick is Disney World!

You’re looking at spots for your next vacation. Are you headed to a beach or to a city or to the mountains? The mountains—traveling is one of my passions. I’ve been to 6/7 continents (Antarctica, I’m coming for you!) but one of my favorite trips ever was trekking through the Himalayas. Such an unforgettable experience! [There’s only one place to experience the true nature of the Himalayas in India: Wildflower Hall, Shimla]

What goes into the perfect sandwich? Pastrami, provolone, Russian dressing and brown rye. Can’t beat a classic.

Describe the best meal you’ve ever had and with whom: This was probably in Ios, Greece. I was traveling with a friend, doing some island hopping. We rented two ATVs and drove around the island for a few hours and got pretty lost… But we ended up finding a small family-run shack alongside a cliff that had a few tables. Best fresh calamari I’ve ever had! [Explore this Greek island by staying at the boutique Liostasi Hotel and Suites and if you want the best seafood around, head to the beachside Almyra By The Sea]

What’s your comfort food? My mom makes the best Borscht this side of the Pacific.

Fuck, Marry, Kill: cheese, sushi, BBQ Fuck: BBQ, Marry: sushi, Kill: cheese

Fashion-wise, what season do you look forward to most? Definitely fall. Hoodies and jean jackets all day! [We already know you wear your heart on your sleeve, so do it literally with this Commes des Garçons Hoodie—perfect for Fall!]

What’s one article of clothing you can’t live without? My flannel collection. I’ll be an 80’s baby forever.

You’re redecorating your home. What room are you most excited to furnish? I love collecting art and all sorts of knick-knacks. Some might call me a hoarder. I just don’t have enough room for it all! But the living room tends to be where all my best stuff is located.

Do you follow a particular diet regimen? I usually just eat what I like, but try to maintain a balanced diet. I’m not into diet fads or regimens (although maybe I should be?). Even though I don’t always eat healthy, I think eating well is pretty much common sense! I also don’t drink any soda.

Name a favorite music artist: Radiohead

What album or mix is on repeat? A Moon Shaped Pool [Listen to the live version of Radiohead’s album here]

What music festival(s) do you look forward to attending? Primavera Sound, Coachella, and FYF.

Describe the best party you’ve ever been to and why: The year was 1992. It was my 5th birthday party. The Ninja Turtles CAME TO MY HOUSE with a Ninja Turtles cake. Enough said.

You get to the bar, you immediately order: Moscow Mule [Learn how to make this cocktail here]

What’s your dream job? When I was a kid, I really wanted to be a pediatrician (don’t ask me why). Since then, a “dream job” was never really something on my mind. I’ve recently realized that it’s because I’m not particularly interested in limiting myself to one profession. Right now, I’m more focused on developing multiple areas of interest that can eventually generate multiple revenue streams. So I suppose if I had to put it into words, my dream job would entail being a successful producer, experimental filmmaker, mixed media artist, entrepreneur, investor, and philanthropist. I also envision myself one day becoming a teacher. Maybe when I retire!

What was your first job and what do you think it taught you? I started working at my dad’s pawn shop at an early age. I worked there on and off up through college. It was located in a pretty bad area of New Jersey and definitely not a job for the faint of heart, especially when you’re just a kid! We had some pretty interesting customers from all walks of life and a whole lot of big personalities. Those years taught me how to negotiate, deal with, and respect people from all across the spectrum.

If you could teach anything to someone, what would it be? Open your heart and mind to the world and people around you. I genuinely believe everyone on earth has something to offer. So listen up! It’s hard to grow by being set in your ways. [This is fantastic advice!]

Is there anyone you admire right now who you think is doing great things? Tell me about them! I’ve always admired my mom and dad. They came to this country from the Soviet Union with absolutely nothing so that my sister and I could have everything. I truly appreciate everything I have each and every day and try not to take anything for granted. My parents taught me the value of hard work but also allowed me the freedom to pursue my dreams. I can never thank them enough for their love and support!

What are your favorite social media accounts to follow on any platform? I’m more of an Instagram guy:

@adipocere (beautiful hand embroidery on linen and skin!) [See more of his art here]
@scorpiondagger (super fun animations and a great twist on classic paintings)
@_dr_woo_ (i’m lucky enough to wear one of his pieces)
@novemura (a scientist from another solar system)

Relationship Status? I’ve had the pleasure of spending the past year with the loveliest human being to inhabit this plane of existence. She is my best friend, partner in crime, and creative companion.

Any dating deal breakers? Lack of open and honest communication.

What’s the best time of day to have sex: Nothing like some afternoon delight 😉
